Are You Good Enough For Heaven?
This most important question may never have crossed your mind, yet it is the most important one you could ever ask. Just think for a moment if you went through your whole life believing you were a good person, and more to the point, you were destined for the place called heaven only to find on the day of your death that you really weren't that much of a good person after all, and were certainly not a fit candidate for heaven. How horrid that would be! Better to find out now and make preparation before it is too late.
In order to find out if you are good enough for heaven let's examine ourselves in the light of God's law and commandments. God has said the following:
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet.
Exodus 20:1-17 (King James Version)
Now, go through this list, one by one, and ask yourself which one of these have I never broken. And by never broken we don't mean never done outwardly. You may well have never killed someone and so broken the sixth commandment, but have you ever hated someone in your heart? Ever had 'road rage' after someone has cut you up? If so then you have manifested the seeds of murder in your heart. God sees even that as breaking His commandment of 'thou shalt not kill.'
Or you may have never gone out and had an 'extra marital affair', as it is often called, but have you ever lusted after someone who is not your spouse? Be honest, you know you have, and so have broken the seventh commandment. Or, well their's not much point is asking this one, have you ever lied? Better to ask 'how many lies have you told in your life?' You know, if you're honest, you probably can't remember how many.
We could go through all of God's commandments in this way and you will find that you have broken them all. Now, are you really a good person? Are you really good enough for heaven? Remember, God's standard for heaven, measured by His law and commandments is 100%. That's right, if you want to get to heaven by being good then total perfection is required.
The Bible says in Galatians 3v10 ' 'For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed
is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.'
The book of James chapter 2v10 says, ' For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all'. So, if you want to get to heaven by the law of God, or by being a good person, you know you have already failed and are not, in God's eyes, good enough for heaven as you have broken God's law many, many times. In fact, as God's standard is perfection, we are ever breaking God's law and falling short of His standards.
Is there then any hope for you? By yourself the answer is a definite no! You are simply not worthy or good enough for heaven. That is where the Son of God Jesus Christ comes in. He came to die on a cross because man is simply not worthy for heaven because he has broken all of God's law and so stands guilty and condemned by a holy God. The only way we sinners can ever be accepted is by someone else taking our punishment and place. Only by resting in this one Jesus Christ can we be set free from the punishment we deserve. Only God can satisfy the demands of His law. You have no hope of heaven by being 'good.' Turn to Jesus Christ, cry out to Him for mercy, and trust His righteousness to make you acceptable to God.
Only by the cross of Jesus Christ can we be saved. This is good news to mankind. God became a man in order to take the punishment we deserve. You too can come to know of God's wonderful forgiveness by crying out to Him. He has promised to give you real life, ever lasting life if you do. He has promised He will not turn you away. Come as you are to Jesus Christ and begin the gift of new life today.
